Course Information

This has been developed as a four-week course that will meet the underpinning knowledge of the IRSE Installation Technician licence. The course is comprised of five modules and incorporates what traditional training schools would have covered in Basic Signalling 1 (BS1), Basic Signalling 2 (BS2) , Electrical Installation Skills Course, Safety Procedure for Working on Electrical Equipment (SPWEE) and Basic Circuit Reading. 

The modules have been developed as part of a Signalling Apprenticeship Scheme and therefore align with the IRSE Installer categories and the Signalling NVQs. They can however be treated as stand-alone modules. 

This course comprises of 5 modules: 

• Module 1 – BS1 (Week 1)
• Module 2 – BS2 (Week 2)
• Module 3 – Installation Techniques (Week 3)
• Module 4 – SPWEE (Week 4, 1 day)
• Module 5 – Integrity Checks (Week 4, 2 days)

The modules are designed to be run together, but we do offer each one as a standalone course, provided that delegates have the pre-requisite knowledge from prior modules or equivalent.

Pre-requisites

No specific pre-requisites are required, as this course is made for those new to the signalling sector. You should have a good grasp of English and a willingness to learn about the UK signalling system.

Course Outcomes

After completing all of the modules, delegates will have the underlying knowledge and understanding of a signalling technician. For specific details of what is covered across each module, please browse the individual module pages (linked at the bottom of this page).

Assessment

Delegates will be assessed differently depending on each module. After completing all modules, we will issue a certificate certifying the completion and competence of all modules. For specific details of how delegates are assessed, please browse the individual module pages (linked below).

Modules

Basic Signalling 1 (BS1)

This course has been designed for individuals who are new to signalling and want to gain the fundamental skills needed in the signalling sector. We have tailored the course for those who are just starting out in the field, and we can implement customisations as needed for candidates or companies.

Basic Signalling 2 (BS2)

This course is designed for individuals new to signalling and follows on from principles established in Basic Signalling 1 (BS1). The course will prepare delegates to understand basic fault finding techniques and how to work on operational points equipment.

Installation Techniques

This course covers the techniques and processes required when completing installation work. This course is designed to train persons required to assemble signalling systems, sub system component parts and install and terminate wires and cables.

Integrity Checks

This course will give delegates the skills needed to carry out inspections of locations and equipment rooms, wire counts, cable testing and finding cable faults.

Safety Procedures for Working on Electrical Equipment (SPWEE)

A course designed for personnel who need a thorough understanding of electrical risks, hazards, and safety measures. Participants will learn how to perform safe electrical isolations for equipment, whether their work involves electrical maintenance or dealing with ancillary equipment powered by a supply source or cabinet.
