Course Information

This course is designed to train persons required to undertake corrective and preventative maintenance of signalling cables, specifically how to joint and terminate cables.

Prerequisites

Before attending this course, delegates should have successfully completed Signal Engineering Maintenance 1 (SEM 1), SES 2 or equivalent.

Course Outcomes

Delegates will learn and develop their understanding of:

• How maintenance and testing may affect the safe operation of the railway
• How to ensure operational and personal safety is maintained during the work and how to avoid personal injury
• How various cables are required to function under normal operating conditions and how each of the cable types contributes to the overall operation of the signalling system
• The terminology and methods used to identify signalling cables
• The tools required to complete the work and what equipment calibration is required
• What the limits are of your own responsibility and authority
• How to take the equipment out of operational service and hand it back
• Maintenance reporting documentation and control procedures
• Reporting lines and escalation procedures
• How to joint and terminate a range of cables including lineside, tail and telecommunications
• How to apply heat shrink and resin closures

Assessment

Delegates will be assessed by a combination of practical assessments and a written knowledge assessment. Upon completion of the course, the delegate will be issued a certificate of competence.
